Sky Arrow

Some of you might remember that some weeks ago Mel told us of a lady, Rose Meredith,  whose husband had died and left a houseful of assorted RC models and equipment that she was trying to dispose of. One of the models caught my eye and I made contact with Rose through Mel and eventually bought the model and some other bits and pieces. The model was a Hacker ‘Sky Arrow 650’. It’s a semi scale copy of a two seater microlite. Some of you might have seen it flying recently.SkyArrowandMe

I sent this photo of me and the Sky Arrow to Rose to let her know that the model had flown at least once!

She very kindly replied, thanking me for the photo and sending best wishes to the Club for Christmas and New Year.

This is a cRoseLetteropy of her card:-

Pole Cottage

Another good day at Pole Cottage yesterday. Some good flying then a shower. The locals and some of our party went home. The rest flew for another very pleasant hour and a half until another heavy shower. Went and packed our planes away in the van but then the rain stopped. Went back to the slope with just tx and venom. Planned to fly it really high and land back in car park. But wind had dropped to not much so just colined about for half an hour. Much sillier than Colin, pushed out much further and walked a long way down the hill.
Good day. Thanks everyone. Robert

Freebie Day.

Thanks to a very kind donation by the family of Mumtaz Al-Daftary , SMFC had a range of models which were to be made available to members on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

This photo was taken on the day many of the models were made available to members.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a turnout!

living wings

Thanks to Barry for organizing and everyone who was at Pole Cottage yesterday.

Highlights of an excellent day.

Barry’s huge living wings glider.

Full sized gliders dodging about under Colin’s wildthing.

Mel’s silly grin after the maiden flight of his Sunbird.

Tracy and Scott’s many and varied collection of planes, a few quite suitable for the slope !

And I got home in plenty of time to see Portugal’s second goal. And without any real mending !

Thanks again

Robert

Death of a Riot.

It is with great sadness that I have to report the loss of a truly amazing plane.

The Blue Riot had flown many a sortie, it carried planes on piggyback, flew with smoke, rockets and even ribbons.

On one occasion it even carried a banner for someones 40th, but we wont go into that.

What could possibly kill this amazing plane I hear you ask?

Well it all started when I noticed on this very blog site that Dave had modified the tail on his Riot, what a fantastic idea I thought, I’ve never flown a plane with a fully moving tail before, so set about to modify mine in a similar but less broken way.

So it came to pass that on Sunday the 29th of May 2016, I sat at the flight line and readied myself for what I thought would be an interesting flight…

The modifications held well, less can be said of the battery cover 🙁

RE8 ‘It Flies’

The decision to build a RE8 is from recent information from Belgium confirming my Great Uncle died whilst flying an RE8 in Belgium at the end of the First World War, which was a surprise as he normally flew Bristol Fighters.

This first model is small with a 37″ wingspan and 25″ long and a bit heavy, it is intended to test its ability to fly, as they had a reputation of being a ‘Killer’ even models are said to be difficult to fly. The plan is to build a larger version next winter using wood and cloth. I used the attached drawing plus a specification of the original planes to design the model using balsa, aluminium and foamboard for the main wings.

The maiden flight was a surprise as it took off cleanly and was stable with no trim required… however, like the fullsize aircraft it does not like too much roll as it stalls the wings and drops into a dive. but flown in gentle circuits it is stable together with a nice glide for landing. It did manage 1 loop, but was not happy.
